Lead Product Designer / Quality Control Manager

 

I was tasked with creating and staffing a product design department. By the third quarter, the department had grown to a staff of four; a Project Manager, Associate Industrial Designer and Director of Sourcing and Logistics. I helped lead the team to grow profit margins, increase efficiency, identify new markets, and form operational strategies.

 

Duties

- Oversee all qualitative & quantitative product research, product design, and production.

- Lead design team and guide workflow.

- Creation and final review of all product specifications including fit, function, intended market and CFM.

- Manage product pipeline from concept through to marketing.

- Serve as liaison between design, marketing, management and manufacturing.

- Manage product development budget.

- Perform face-to-face client interaction and presentations for shows and expos.

- Oversee product analysis and testing on all third party goods.

- Travel to Asia for vendor relations and quality control 2-3 times per year.

- Communicate with third party Chinese QC.

- FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis)

- Provide factory flow efficiency diagrams & equipment layouts.

- Structural integrity testing of both product and packaging.

- Inspection protocols and AQL (Acceptable Quality Limit) analysis.

- Provide final inspection of product production samples.

- Serve as daily product expert for domestic and international Marketing, Sales, and CSR teams.

- Approval figure for content accuracy; website copy, social media copy, and product videos,

- Provide photo realistic renderings for product permutations that are too costly to replicate for actual photography.

- Created CAD management and part numbering system for PDM integration.

- Led DFM and CFM resourcing effort in 2014 for 100% of pre-existing product-line.

- Generated gross margin increase from 18% to above 40% through sourcing collaboration with Senior Management.

- Brought over 200 product assemblies to fruition.

- Created full line of pro athlete gear and equipment for Pro-weightlifter & Olympic medalist, Dmirty Klokov.

- Developed and sourced a full line of athletic clothing; estimated launch, 2016.

- Given full responsibility for 100% structural redesign of packaging, to ensure all goods ship safely.

- Implemented a FMEA protocol to better product quality and manufacturing efficiency.

- Built relationships with new key manufacturers along side the Director of Sourcing & Logistics.

 

Van Stry Design, LLC

Project Manager / Senior Industrial Designer

 

I led the design team, interacted with vendors and clients, and built a solid understanding of manufacturing and materials. I was promoted to Senior Designer after my first year. Soon after, I assumed additional responsibilities as a Project Manager for key accounts. I also helped the company grow its network of, new, reliable domestic manufacturers through research and qualification standards.

 

Duties

- Manage design workflow and production phases for key accounts such as Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue.

- Manage on site installations across the United States; equipment, vendors, staffing, and travel.

- Manage all product photography.

- Participate in all custom retail exhibit, display, fixture, furniture, and point of purchase designs.

- Create control drawings and specifications for retail displays, high-traffic fixtures, and furniture.

- DFM of domestic production.

- Organize full retail store fixture layouts.

- Serve as product design expert during client meetings.

- Create concept renderings of product in situ, for client presentations.

- Participate in RFQ process to ensure production meets clients’ budget requirements.

 

Key Accomplishments

- Designed customer experiences for Bloomingdales, Brookstone, Kohls, Lord & Taylor, New Balance, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Reebok, Saks Fifth Avenue, Saks Off Fifth, Swarovski, The Bay, and The North Face.

- Created visual workflow system for design team.

- Refaced the printed corporate identity through documents such as purchase order, invoice, and drawing templates.

Industrial Design Internship + Extended Freelance

 

My experience with Origin Product Development introduced me to a large range of product design methods, materials, and processes. I worked on UX interfaces, industrial products, medical devices and soft goods.

- Generate user interface diagrams.

- Design product aesthetic and functional features via 3-D CAD and 2-D visualization.

- Create photo realistic renderings for client presentations.

- Conceptualize visual brand messaging through graphic layouts and logo design.

- Team contributor for user interface design of artificial heart driver.

- Developed key design elements for outpatient device transport.

- Executed full layout and implementation of newly branded company website.
